Ella in the City

Oh Ella, you are always a guaranteed fun shoot. Of course I am biased, she's my niece and all, but what an awesome morning we had together. Thanks for sharing the second half of your shoot with your two loopey nutjob cousins (next time will have a new baby and hopefully a visiting baby Bekah for a five cousin extravaganza)! Have a fun time choosing mom and dad, cousin togetherness to follow.

Ella Bella
I am a little partial seeing as she is my niece, but I think Ella has the most beautiful eyes. And those are all hers not some trick of photoshop. I am so happy to finally be posting these, we delayed the shoot till after her vacation and then snuck it in before I went to california and Josh's surgery. Now, at last, here they are, Happy Big One Ella!

I Hope They Are Worth The Wait
And now, at last, my niece Ella. How is it possible that she is 9 months old already? I remember meeting her in a hallway as she and mom were wheeled out of an emergency c-section like it happened last week. Her hair has grown in a bit since her 6 months pictures and darkened a bit.

oh, and she's really cute.

Ella is a bit into the separation anxiety, a bit. So we have a lot of head and shoulders shots from where I had to crop her momma out. She wasn't letting go of that giraffe either, Mr. Giraffe enjoyed the photo shoot too. Especially when Ella really got laughing at her daddy and did her "argh I'm a pirate smiles" (at left)! I'll admit to some unprofessional behavior in that I tended to laugh too much and not take enough pictures of Pirate Ella.

Ella is uber cute and I tried not to do too much editing on her pictures, I mean you don't need to mess with perfection! But see I had literally owned my new camera for a few weeks, and some of my new gear for less than 24 hours so I wasn't quite used to everything yet. It was my first time using a pre-set custom white balance, which I had done to get nice shots on our cloudy day. Well it wasn't entirely cloudy and I sort of forgot about the preset when the sun came out, and yeah you get some way over-exposed shots. This two were great smiles and were ones that made me sad I couldn't fix the washed out areas, and in the past I may have even scrubbed them. Enter new editing toys and we just turn them into "art" shots instead so it looks like I totally meant it to turn out that way. The one at left I had to salvage somehow, because even straight out of the camera the first things you noticed were her eyes and lips, I decided to honey it up to try and tone down Mr. Giraffe, he's very bright orange, and was you know, sort of not the person I was trying to take photos of that day, maybe next time. The right one I just liked washed out, she was shouting and so exuberant, I just sort of liked that she was so happy and bright that it looked overly sunny. I love the gums and two teeth, love them love them love them!

If it wasn't the giraffe, it was the hands. Ella liked to make me work for it.

The right one, it just sort of happened that way, I liked the vintage 70's look to it, the way she looked like she was dancing. The overall effect made it look like "Ella Dancing- Woodstock, Summer of Love." And I'm sorry, I know I'm biased, but this one at the right? That's all her daddy, my brother, slap some blonde hair on her, but that is daddy right there. One of my favorites, I'm just saying.

Oh you were getting worried I scrapped these two from the sneak preview, weren't you? How can you not love these two, I mean seriously, cute.

And my first take on experimenting with the "storyboard" approach to collages. Sort of cleaner matted print set look than the softer overlaid layers I've done before. This will only be available as an 8x10, because the dimensions get all thrown off in any other size. And where oh where is the solo of the tall photo used in it? Well, yeah, see, I was sort of laying backwards in the dirt doing a low ab crunch trying to get her and the metal work over the stones, and um, I didn't notice the twigs of the bushes I was lying in sticking up all in the right third of the picture. Yeah, whoops. So super cool shot when cropped like this, not so much anyway else. Note to self, have someone hold back bush in future. Of course that someone would've had to have been her daddy, who was, well the one she is looking at because he is making her laugh. So maybe I could have used my foot in some really awesome yoga pose.
When you have a baby who won't let go of mommy and you've never been to this location before, you improvise, and sometimes forget to look at twigs, right in your line of sight.

I honestly don't even remember taking this shot, but I love it. My auntly caption for what Ella was thinking is "I'm so going to get you guys for this later, soak it up now, but later you will pay." She just looks like she is scratching her head, planning a retaliation for putting her down.

Still in the same courtyard outside Franklin Park Conservatory, here is defense exhibit A that we did get her off of mommy's hip and pleasant, for a few minutes. . .with Mr. Giraffe. I love the brick work on the ground and I really wish I had taken more pictures from the angle on the right than trying to do something interesting with the gate and swing in the background as in the left. I like them both, but the brick is so interesting, props to mom for plopping her down on a good spot.

Okay so here is defense exhibit B that we got Ella down by herself. As you will see, she did so because she could pull leaves up through the grate below her and eat them. 9 month olds, always trying to expand their dining options.

See, "mmmmm, leaf?!? you look interesting!" quickly followed by "mwa leaf, I kiss you and love you. . .and then eat you!" You have already seen what happened (following post) when someone, someone who had her best hygenic needs in mind, took her leaf away. This displeased Ella. Then we tried grass, things were not getting better for Ella (those pics will be on your disc).

Shooting a giant sculpture with a tiny infant, while running because you are waiting for her to freak out and scream, not maybe the best combination. I still think it was cool, but I need to work on not getting so much of the grate she was sitting on in closer shots. Had she been a little more cooperative on sitting alone I think we could have gotten some other interesting things, definitely worth trying again. Storyboard is an 8x10.

After abandoning her in the shadow of a tall shiny pointy thing, and then laying her on her belly in some not so happy about it grass, we took Ella inside the Conservatory to see if she had any gas left in the tank. She was getting pretty tired, which meant the train set in the lobby was super psychadelic awesome. And no, I did not fake those eyes, that's all Ella. Daddy is going to need a very sturdy baseball bat to guard this one.

9 Months Milestone- Super Chubba Cheeks
I love 9 months, it was the super plump phase of both my kids too.

Who's tired? Not Ella! No that is most certainly not the thousand yard stare.

Her mom and dad had their wedding reception at the Conservatory, they even had some pictures taken by this wicked metal orchid sculpture. We couldn't resist trying to eek out a few more smiles with it as a backdrop. Luckily her dad has been working out and held her up for you know 10 minutes, thanks bro, and the receptionist sitting right beneath was super hillarious to Ella.

She likes her hands, she likes to taunt me with the almost most adorable picture ever. . .two birds, one stone.

The one at right is almost spot on for a shot I took in her parents' bedroom when she was 3 months old. This time she was nice enough to not airborne spit up all over dad as a thank you.

That's all folks! Portraits are sized 8x10, but are also available is 5x7, 4x6, and wallets. Storyboards only in 8x10. All of course without the watermark.
Ella's shoot will also be the first one where I will not be accepting change requests, sorry! I have a hard time saying no, but from here on out I will be offering ~30 proofs minimum per shoot, if you don't prefer what I did with a particular photo, please let me know so I can make a note for future shoots with you. However, proofs are available for purchase only as shown, I am hoping that with ~30 proofs with a wide offering of digital darkroom work, that people can find something they like among them, even if my artistic interpretation of a particular portrait does not agree with where you would have gone. Please remember this is all a learning process for me, I have to dig in to figure out my identity as an photographer, and you get to take part in that evolution, good and hopefully not bad.

I Didn't Take the Leaf

All right so I have totally blown my self-imposed 2 week from the photo shoot delivery deadline for proofs from the session. In my defense, I was in the hospital with her cousin for part of that time. Okay a day and a half, but I've been really tired, it's been cloudy, jupiter is in the seventh house!
I know Ella, please stop crying, I'm back on the ball, and I have new toys, and I really promise it will be worth the wait!
Stop crying! Your daddy took the dead leaf you were chewing on away! I had NOTHING to do with that. I just took pictures of you while you cried. Remember, Daddy. . . made you cry, Aunt Melissa. . . snapped pictures while you cried. See? I'm not so bad.
Stop, please stop looking at me like that, I promise I'll have your pictures soon.
